It’s a new challenge and education should be a long-term vision,” says Linda Loppa, who is moving from Polimoda in Florence to set up a new platform for the design school in Paris. In the French city, she will concentrate on “strategy and vision” with the idea of this “Paris connection” as an opportunity to consolidate and develop global relationships. “I believe in this triangle – Paris more feminine and elegant, Antwerp more experimental and Florence with the multi-discipline of the Renaissance,” Linda said when I caught up with her. Always a thinker, as well as a doer, her years of experience teaching fashion design and putting Belgian designers on the international map were followed by nine years spent giving the Florentine fashion school a diversified and competitive education syllabus. With the encouragement of Polimoda’s president, Ferruccio Ferragamo, Loppa left her native Belgium and returned to her family’s Italian roots. But her vision over the past near-decade has always been ambitious and global. Training for students was extended in order to expand courses and to focus on both the creative and the business side of fashion. “This brings Polimoda to the world,” said Linda. “Without having a clear plan, it is like a white page – quite vast and very exciting.” Altogether, Loppa’s years at Flanders Fashion Institute and the Antwerp Fashion Museum, plus her 20 years as a retailer, have given her a fashion career of 45 years – a strong platform on which to build a new vision for Polimoda.
